When someone asks Google's AI Mode for "a mechanic near me who can look at my brakes today," there's a good chance they'll now see a link to your website in the middle of the answer. Where that link takes them, and whether that page can turn a curious stranger into a booked appointment, matters more than it did a few weeks ago.
What Google changed, and when
On October 15, 2026, Google announced a set of changes to how links to websites show up in AI Mode and AI Overviews. The post came from Hema Budaraju, Google's vice president of product management, as reported by BetaNews and Search Engine Journal. PPC Land counted five separate changes. These are the ones that matter most for a local business:
- Inline links appear higher, more often. These are the small links placed right next to a sentence in the AI answer. According to 9to5Google, Google says they will show up "higher up in responses more frequently." A searcher can tap straight through when your business comes up, without scrolling to a source list at the bottom.
- A test of an official-site section. Google is testing a dedicated spot at the top of some answers for official websites. ContentGrip notes it's aimed at searches where someone needs to reach a specific organization or get something done on its official site. It's a test, so you may not see it everywhere yet.
- More visible source links overall. Google is also making links at the end of some AI answers stand out more and adding things like news carousels and creator profiles, per Analytics Insight.
There's one catch worth knowing. BetaNews points out that Search Console still doesn't break out clicks from AI results on their own, so you can't open a neat report showing exactly how many visitors AI Mode sent you. You'll have to track results another way, which we cover below.
